Since the existing epoxy floor coating has aged or the floor requires upgrading, epoxy flooring projects often need renovation. Although material selection and construction techniques are basically the same for new floor installation and old floor renovation, their construction procedures differ. So how should an epoxy flooring project be renovated?
First of all, floor renovation requires removing the old floor layer and carrying out base surface treatment. Next is the removal of the old coating. It is necessary to assess the aging condition of the original floor and check compatibility with the new floor paint. If the floor is severely aged, soak and rinse the surface with water, then scrape off the old coating with a putty knife.
For solvent-based old floors, mechanical removal methods such as wire brushes or electric grinders are commonly adopted. This method is more suitable because solvent-based epoxy floor coatings have a relatively dense surface.
