Four Major Deficiencies in the Development of China's Heavy-Duty Anticorrosive Coatings Industry

Executive Editor:Guangdong Jinfeng New Material Technology Co., Ltd Responsibility publication time:2025-11-14

China’s heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings industry started almost in step with the reform and opening-up drive, with a relatively late beginning. In 2011, China’s heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings achieved remarkable results, with substantial improvements in output and product performance, as well as growth in application scope and service life to varying degrees. It is predicted that China’s macro economy will maintain a steady high growth rate of 7%–8% over the next decade. Industries closely related to ship heavy-duty anticorrosive coating works, including shipbuilding, containers, urban infrastructure construction, petrochemicals, energy, transportation, food and pharmaceuticals, will grow 10%–15% faster than the GDP growth rate. Accordingly, the heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings and engineering sector will embrace rapid development.

Nevertheless, China’s heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings industry still faces many urgent problems to be solved. For the healthy development of the industry, four key issues need to be addressed.

1. Prioritize environmental protection, energy saving, high performance and functionalization

The industry must take environmental friendliness, energy conservation, high performance and functionalization as the core development focus of heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings and application technology. Within the next five years, environmentally friendly long-term antifouling coatings must be developed to meet the requirement of banning tributyltin antifouling coatings implemented in 2008. It is necessary to develop anticorrosive coatings based on composite phosphate antirust paints to replace highly toxic and environmentally harmful heavy-metal primers such as red lead and chromate coatings. High-solid, solvent-free and water-based anticorrosive coatings shall gradually replace traditional solvent-based products. Meanwhile, research and promotion of water-based anticorrosive coatings and water-based epoxy floor coatings should be accelerated.

2. Standardize and regulate the market

At present, relatively complete coating standards have been established for offshore platforms, railway bridges, vehicles, shipbuilding and repair, containers and naval vessels. However, industry standards and supporting coating systems for sewage treatment systems in petrochemical, electronic, food and other fields are still under formulation. Disordered and irregular competition has emerged in some market segments. For instance, industrial flooring covers a wide range of industries, making standardization difficult. Even if national standards are issued, they can hardly cover all application scenarios, easily leading to disordered competition and hindering the sound development of the industry.

3. Strengthen research on coating applicability and construction technology to ensure product reliability

Based on the integrated concept of coating material and construction application, greater importance shall be attached to research on construction performance: the adaptability of coatings to different substrate treatment standards, compatibility with various construction methods and processes, and tolerance to diverse construction environments. It is essential to continuously optimize overall product performance, improve coating matching systems and performance evaluation standards, and enhance the scientificity and rationality of supporting systems to adapt to different corrosive environments. Special attention should be paid to the construction technology, surface treatment and coating matching systems for equipment maintenance and recoating projects, which face variable corrosion conditions, complex existing coating damage and harsh construction environments.

4. Strengthen vocational skill training for coating practitioners to upgrade overall industry quality and competitiveness
In recent years, anticorrosive coating contractors are mainly private enterprises concentrated in Jiangsu, Henan and other regions, with construction teams largely composed of migrant workers. Although their construction management capability and professional quality have improved greatly over the past decade, systematic professional training is still lacking, making it difficult to meet the demands of high-end market projects. The development of China’s shipbuilding and heavy-duty anticorrosion industry requires a large number of high-quality project managers, technical representatives and skilled construction workers. Relevant industry associations should assume responsibility for standardized vocational training in the coming years.
